On the cover, San FranciscoÕs
Harbor Emergency Hospital and Union Ferry Building, April 18, 1906

he Harbor Emergency Hospital on the waterfront (long a factor in the city’s care of the victims of accidents and broils) was filled from the first. The injured and sick and dying were taken there in large numbers from the charnel-house south of Market. While the fire was burning hottest all around, the attendants worked away, unmindful of the danger. Ambulances and patrol wagons hurried the patients to the hospital, while others waited to remove them should it become necessary.”
–Frank W. Aitken and Edward Hilton, A History of the Earthquake and Fire in San Francisco, 1906

3-D Stereo Views of San Francisco's Great Earthquake and Fire.

Minutes after the 1906 quake, photographers were on the scene, documenting California’s greatest natural disaster. A few had special 3-D cameras, enabling them to record the events of that fateful April in a particularly vivid and affecting medium. Their “stereo views” of the catastrophe, viewed in 3-D through a “stereoscope,” were the way in which many vicariously experienced the quake and its aftermath, from the relative comfort of their own unshaken parlors.

In the award-winning new book, Earthquake Days, the story of 1906 San Francisco is told through these rare, original 3-D images—magnificently reproduced along with firsthand accounts, vintage newspapers, lithographs, and maps—enabling the 21st-century reader to experience the earthquake and fire as never before.

Most of the stereo views in Earthquake Days are presented both as 3-D photos AND as large, 2-D photos. This huge, full-color book includes a 3-D viewer and an illustrated history of this remarkable photographic genre.

Hundreds of original 2- and 3-D images.

Hardcover (220 pages; 10.25" x 13" x 1"; 4.6 lbs.)

Earthquake Days is one of those rare and special books—both smart and gorgeous. Burkhart’s personal passion for stereophotography rings through these pages, coupled with his great sense of history and storytelling. The illustrations are lustrous, with stereo card views, bird’s-eye views, and fantastic full color reproductions of period newspapers, lithographs and more. This book is a tremendous contribution to the visual history of one of the world’s most famous disasters.”
–Stephen Becker, Executive Director, California Historical Society

“What a pleasure and more—what a surprise to find in this elegant book both a revitalization and a powerful retelling of the familiar drama of San Francisco’s destruction by earthquake and fire in 1906. Burkhart has gathered not only the most complete collection of photographs (many of them stereo views) and other illustrative revelations, he has created—page after page—a richly rewarding, enlightening experience for what should be his many, many readers. What a pleasure for them!”
–J. S. Holliday, author of The World Rushed In and Rush for Riches

“A beautiful book.”
–Philip L. Fradkin, author of The Great Earthquake and Firestorms of 1906
